A Guide to Great Marketing Videos: Pre-Production

If you don’t have video marketing incorporated into your marketing plan yet, what are you waiting for? Video marketing is vital to marketing your business. Knowing what goes into creating a marketing video can help make the process a little easier.

Welcome to the first in our 3 part blog series where we hope to get you excited about bringing great marketing videos to your business by walking you through what it takes.

The first part is called pre-production. This is where you make a plan (we *LOVE* plans).

Here you answer some very important questions.

  • What are your objectives for the video?
    • It’s good to know what you are trying to achieve with the video so you can measure the video’s success. Setting SMART goals is a great strategy for answering this question.
  • Who are you making this video for?
    • Knowing who your audience is will help you with the decisions you make during the video process. Should we add some jazz flute to this one? Probably not if your market likes reggae!
  • What message are you trying to send?
    • This question can also be considered your “call-to-action” question. If you want your audience to make a purchase, then what do you need to do in your video to encourage them to do that?

Once you have the answers to these questions nailed down, it’s time for a strategy! This part is all about logistics. You want to make a video, so how do we do it? How can I use it to maximize my ROI? This part of the process can be a little more difficult to get right on the first try, but the more that you do it and learn your market, the better you will understand your audience and what they like.

Next is the really fun part, the creative! Brainstorm some ideas about how you want your marketing video to look. Take note of some videos with creative elements that you like and don’t like. Once you have some ideas, consider your target audience and narrow your options down until you have one great concept.

Now that you have a strategy and a creative, let’s figure out what we want people to say! This is where you write your script. Your target audience and creative concept will majorly influence the script for your marketing video.  Try to also consider locations, actors, and video length during this process.

The last part is organizing everything for the big day! Schedule shoot times, secure your cast, make sure everyone knows where to go and when to go there, acquire your props, secure your locations, and make sure you have all the equipment you need.

Pre-production is a lot of work, but it is all necessary for the perfect marketing video. If you are still unsure about marketing videos for your business, Muldrow Marketing makes it easy!
